Our favorite season on the trail
Autumn is when the mountains feel most generous. The summer crowds have gone home, the air is cool enough to walk all day, and the forests turn gold, orange and red, from the beech woods of the Greater Caucasus to the old Hyrcanian forests of the Talysh Mountains in the south.
It is also the season when shepherds bring their flocks down from the high summer pastures, so on many routes you share the trail with sheep, dogs and the families who move with them. In the villages, the stoves are lit again and the tea comes out hot.
Where we hike in autumn
Our most-loved ways to spend an autumn day
Every route is chosen with you, based on the weather and how much walking you want.

The south at its best
Sim and the Talysh forests
Old Hyrcanian forests turn gold and red around Sim village in the Talysh Mountains, with waterfalls and beehives along the way. Runs until mid-December.

Golden beech woods
Garanohur Lake
A forest walk in Shahdag National Park to a still mountain lake. From mid-October the woods around it turn yellow and gold.

Villages and shepherds
Khinalig and Galaykhudat
An easy walk between two high villages. In autumn the flocks come down from the summer pastures, so you often share the path with shepherds. Continue to Griz for a longer day.

Waterfalls and high pastures
Kuzun–Laza
From Kuzun near Shahdag down the Macigal valley to Laza village, with waterfalls on the cliffs around it. A moderate day with some climbing.

Culture and villages
Baku, Gobustan and a village trek
Four days: Baku and Gobustan first, then two days on foot from Khinalig to Galaykhudat and Griz, with a night in a village home.

Best in cool, wet weather
The mud volcanoes
The mud volcanoes are at their best in the cool, wet months. The mud stays soft and runny, and the craters bubble and spill over, while summer heat bakes much of it into a cracked crust. An easy half day from Baku.
“Well organised and friendly, helpful guide. Such a special experience.”

How an autumn day works
Days get shorter as autumn goes on, so we start early and keep the plan clear.
1
We plan the route together
Tell us what you would like to see and we recommend the best route for the season and your group. We check conditions again the day before.
2
We pick you up
From your hotel in Baku, Guba, Shahdag or anywhere else. Early, to make the most of the light.
3
On the trail
Private, at your pace, with a local guide, and a stop for hot tea in a village when we can.
4
Back before dark
Off the trail before the light goes, and back to your hotel in the evening.
Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket and boots with good grip. Higher up, nights are cold. We send a full packing list when you book.
Plan your autumn trip
Tell us your dates, how many of you are coming and what kind of walking you enjoy. We reply with a route that suits the season and the weather.
